WellBEH - team

The project brings together a team composed of architects, engineers, and sociologists with different experiences and professional backgrounds and international consultants with a relevant curriculum in the disciplinary areas of the project. WellBEH also foster greater cooperation between academia, industry, and society in implementing new approaches to built heritage.

Luciana Rocha (Principal Investigator)
CENP/FAUP, Portugal

Architect (FAUP, 2007) with a PhD in Architecture (FAUP, 2016). Assistant Researcher at CENP/ FAUP. Her main interests lie in the architectural heritage of the 20th century, mainly multitamily housing and intervention strategies regarding preservation measures, energy efficiency, comtort, and well-being.

Rui Fernandes Póvoas
CENP/FAUP, Portugal

Engineer with a PhD in Civil Engineering (FEUP, 1991). Emeritus Professor (UP) and co-chair of the International Specialist Committee on lechnology (ISC/T). He develops research in the Conservation and Rehabilitation of Old Buildings, focusing on the structural and constructive system of buildings constructed between the 19th and 20th centuries.

Ana Tostões
CITUA/IST-UL, Portugal

Architect, critic, and historian of architecture, with a PhD in culture and technology in Modern Architecture (IST-UL, 2003). She is Full Professor at (ISTUL), leader of the CiTUA Heritage research line, and President of DoCoMoMo Portugal. Her research focuses on the critical history and rehabilitation of modern architecture, with a focus on cultural and climatic issues.

Ana Sofia Guimarães
FEUP, Portugal

Engineer with a PhD in Civil Engineering (FEUP, 2011). She is Associate Professor at FEUP and a member of the Institute of R&D in Structures and Construction. Her main research interests lie in building physics, rising damp, building pathology, and building rehabilitation. She has also been exploring the developments and limitations of BIM.

Azar Mohammadpanah
CENP/FAUP, Portugal

Architect and PhD candidate at FAUP. Holds a Master's degree in Architectural Design and History (PoliMi, 2019). Her research interests include architectural heritage and history, housing and urban context, practices and policies in transforming urban residential areas, preservation of the history of Modern heritage and sustainable intervention.

Eliseu Gonçalves
CENP/FAUP, Portugal

Architect with a PhD in Architecture (FAUP, 2015). He is Associate Professor at FAUP in the scientific area of Construction technology. He develops research on Architecture and Construction design, especially on Portuguese industrial architecture, public housing, climate and architectural form

Giuseppe Galbiati
USI, Switzerland

Postdoctoral researcher and teaching assistant at Accademia di architettura di Mendrisio, US and UClouvain. Holds a PhD in retrofitting of Modern Heritage (2023, cotutelle EPFL and UCLouvain). His interests lie in construction history, architectural preservation, and the energy efficiency of existing buildings.

Virgílio Borges Pereira
IS/FLUP, Portugal

Sociologist with a PhD in Sociology (FLUP, 2002). He is Full Professor at FLUP and researcher at the Institute of Sociology of the University of Porto. His research focuses on the production of social and cultural inequalities in ditterent spatial contexts of Northern Portugal, he's also keen on housing policy and its urban and social ettects.

Pedro Azambuja Varela
CENP/FAUP, Portugal

Architect (FAUP, 2006) with a PhD in Architecture (FAUP, 2020). He is a PhD researcher at CENP/ FAUP. Interested in reducing the carbon footprint of construction by mixing classical materials and technologies with contemporary digital possibilities, he is an expert in BIM Authoring, having taught several courses related to Computer Assisted Design.

Marco Reschetti (Research Grant)
FAUP, Portugal

Architect and PhD candidate at FAUP. Holds a Master's degree in Civil Engineering - Construction, from the Polytechnic Institute of Porto (ISEP/ IPP, 2019). He is a specialist in Building Information Modelling (BIM), and his research interests lie at the intersection of architectural history and technology.

Martina Ghilardi (Research Initiation Scholarship)
FAUP, Portugal

Architecture Graduate from the Polytechnic of Milan (PoliMi, 2025), having completed part of her studies at FAUP (Erasmus program, 2024). She has been developing academic and practical experience in the field of intervention in built heritage, with interest in the role of architecture as an urban activator.

Franz Graf
USI, Switzerland

Architect with a PhD in Architecture (EPFL). He is Full Protessor at Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio (USi, Switzerland) and the President of Docomomo Switzerland. His research focuses on knowledge of modern and contemporary systems of construction and techniques of preservation of 20th-century heritage.

Daniel Barber
TUe, Netherlands

Architect (Yale, 2005) with a PhD in Architectural History and Theory (Columbia GSAPP, 2010). He is Full Professor at TU Eindhoven. His research interests include architectural history and global environmental culture towards a better engagement between architectural expertise and climate crisis.

Ray Galvin
CISL, United Kingdom

Senior Researcher at the Institute for Future Energy Consumer Needs and Behaviour, RWTH-Aachen University, and a Tutor at CISL. He holds a PhD in Environmental Science and Politics. His leading research encompasses energy saving in buildings, including the influences of policy, building design, and consumer behaviour.
